After reading this terrific weekly paper for many years, I visited their offices and my longtime friend, Ruth Rothseid who is their advertising director.

I love their tag line--"From Midtown to The Mideast" and delivering news, education, current events and everything you would want to know.

The Snow Did Not Stop This Great Event--NAWBO and The Wonderful Carlisle Collection

 
 
 

Last night-right before the snow started to fall, there was a terrific event with  The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) in the beautiful showroom of one of my favorite places--The Carlisle Collection (see their showroom above)--and their clothes and shopping style are amazing!! I wear them all the time!

I am standing with 4 great NAWBO members and models for the evening-- from left-- Jan Andrew -RAMEDIA;  Alexandra Kelemen, Int'l Executive Coaching; Carolyn Sevos, IntraCommunities/YouCake.Inc; Pat Aheasy(NAWBO NYC President) and P&V Enterprises.

We had all of our wonderful photo opportunities with the terrific photographer Ann Watt- www.annwatt.com and www.society-photos.com  She is truly excellent and knows how to capture the right essence. I recommend her highly!

It was a wonderful evening with terrific businesswomen having a great time and surrounded by the great Spring collection of Carlisle.

Learning from The LinkedIn Guru

 

The Rotary Club of New York had a great presentation yesterday on how to really use and understand LinkedIn.

Here I am with -author, speaker and LinkedIn guru--Jan Wallen who literally wrote THE book-- "Mastering LinkedIn in 7 Days or Less'.

Within 30 minutes, Jan gave us all a great overview on how to use this tool and help boost sales and grow our businesses---and understand how over 40 + million people are using the different social media sites.She spoke in a non-technical way and from a real person's perspective  and told us the top 5 things you can do to make it work for your business goals.

Jan has 20 years experience with Fortune 500 and Big 5 firms, advising, mentoring, consulting and training C-level executives, partners and business owners. She has helped thousands of professionals find success in their business and their careers. I have known her for many years and always said she was 'ahead of her time with her knowledge'.

National Compliment Day Jan 24----Shouldn't It Be Everyday

 

Today is National Compliment Day---and I realized I needed to do a bit of research about this wonderful activity and opportunity. Gogle the word and you will find over 15 million mentions!

As we all know, compliments are simple, yet powerful relationship building tools.There are also many reasons to give a compliment. In my first book, NonStop Networking, I talked about giving away 'Five A Day'--where I will look for positive attritrbutes  with the  people I connect with during the day and then compliment them. I put five pennies in my left pocket each morning and every time, I give a strong and sincere compliment, I take a penny and put it into the right pocket. By the end of the day, I always have moved the five pennies. By the way, you don't have to limit yourself to five--- it is just starting the process and taking the action step.

I was reading on line about a company who talks about this exact same concept.As they say and I agree, "Everyday is a good day for a compliment.

When we give a compliment, we focus totally on the other person---and during the process, we also feel better about ourself. I find myself smiling throughout the day after giving out a warm compliment. It also makes me focus more on everything about that person and it gives me the opportunity to truly listen, observe and learn from them.

Think of all the people you can sincerely compliment today and everyday and make it a wonderful habit---and to really go the extra mile--when you deliver it---do it in their preferred method of communication!'

Speaking With the People Who Make Things Happen In New York!

 

  
 

 
 
I had such a great opportunity to speak before a wonderful group of people -who I like to say 'make things happen' for ALL the events you attend--location, food, logistics, entertainment and more!

My friend, Paul Neuman (above to the right) and owner of NEUMAN'S Catering  www.caterernyc.comthe TOP in New York invited me to speak for the International Special Events Society -ISES.  The group is host to the most high profile events in the New York metropolitan area. Anyone you need to know to make your meeting a success can be found amongst the members. I was so impressed with this group that I am joining! The mission of ISES is to educate, advance and promote the special events industry and its network of professionals along with related industries.

The location for this event was at the HELEN MILLS Theater and here I am with  Helen Mills-herself and Charles Tannenbaum who run the organization.  What a fantastic space  and everything was excellent--the perfect atmosphere to speak in the theater and truly an exceptional experience! www.helenmills.com

If I lived in Morris County--I would definitely be a member of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce!

 Again--what a great experience to speak for this very powerful Chamber of Commerce right in Morris County, New Jersey. The energy in the room was terrific and I understand it is like that at every meeting--because their mission is 'helping businesses grow' and they certainly do it well!

Here are some tips that Phyllis offers on finding out if your hotel is in a safe neighborhood-

"Networking for Your Vacation:  Unusual Tips From The Women’s Travel Club Founder, Phyllis Stoller"

---Use google earth to see the hotel from the street view

---Call the hotel, ask for the concierge; request to know what is on the block. If banks and commercial buildings, this area is dark at night. 

---If not satisfactorily answered by the concierge or if there is no concierge, ask for the coffee shop and ask whomever answers, if that employee walks in the area at night.

---Choose a hotel with an outdoor café; that amenity means street traffic and  pedestrians plus lights on cafe awnings.

---Ask for nearest public transportation, then  look up that subway/bus/train stop on a map of the city for ideas of distances from tourist spots you will visit.

---Hotels near embassies, and government buildings usually are in protected areas but check that there is life at night also.

---Check the hotel site to see if they do weddings/conventions/ etc. If so, they are positively viewed by the locals and by the business community. 

---Ask if a tour bus can park in front of the hotel to deliver baggage; if not, the hotel is on a narrow street, which might be dark at night or have little pedestrian traffic.

---Use your existing network: Rotary, Alumni Association, Church , to locate local people for more advice.  For women, look for a local Overseas American Women’s Club.

 

 

 

Don't Count Your Calories--Count Your Blessings

 

 
Everyday we certainly have an opportunity to learn something --and it can come in any form or message.Today I was at Costco's(one of my favorite stores) with my friend Jeannette Paladino  www.writespeaksell.com

As we were walking the aisles, we came across  a crowd getting lots of samples from something called "PopCorners--The new shape of Popcorn".  As we were all tasting all the different flavors, both Jackie and Kim(above) were excellent salespeople telling us all the benefits of this delicious new way of eating popcorn.

I said--'you are a terrific salesperson--yet, the bottom line is that it is still fattening to eat it all!'

Without a blink of an eye, Jackie on the right said: "Don't count your calories, count your blessings'.

She was right and she made a sale! :-)

Morris Country Chamber of Commerce--"Helping Businesses Grow"

 
This morning I had the great opportunity to speak before a very powerful group of business people at The Morris County Chamber of Commerce  www.morrischamber.org

There was such energy in the room with over 100 people who came out of the snow to mix, mingle, connect and learn from each other. This event was their "Women in Business" breakfast and I honored to be a part of it.

Here I am with several of the terrific women that planned this program and also had dinner with last night and it was as if I had known them all forever! We certainly could have talked all evening!

What a great way to start the day--with such a powerful and wonderful group of people who through the  Morris County Chamber of Commerce www.morrischamber.org help each others businesses grow and also make terrific friendships.  I certainly walked away with some new friends!
